Client Spotlight: Shayne

Shayne on the Cadillac

Last week, we talked about incorporating strength training with our Pilates practice and how the two complement each other well. I can’t wait for you to meet my client, Shayne, and hear how she does this in real life and how it has changed her life!

What originally drew you to Pilates, and what made it feel like the right fit for you?

I started Pilates about three years ago to help begin my weight loss journey and ease my way into strength training. I also did it to support Natalie (my SIL) in her business!

Before starting Pilates, what challenges (physical or mental) were you experiencing related to your strength training routine?

After many years of training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I found myself in a fitness slump after gyms shut down during Covid. Post Covid, it was hard for me to get out of that slump and find something to support my body as I started to age more. I had done pretty much nothing fitness-wise and really didn't feel like myself anymore. I needed to do something new and exciting to jump-start me back on my fitness journey.

In what ways has Pilates helped you feel more supported in your daily life and activities?

I like that Pilates has kept me in a routine. I feel accountable to my instructor to show up, and never regret it when I do. I feel that I can bend, move, get off the floor, and balance better. Mentally, Pilates helps me to connect my mind to my body, which is way harder than it sounds. I've learned that this connection can make a huge difference in all areas of different types of training. I feel more mentally connected to my body. I'm an avid weight lifter, and Pilates has really helped to supplement my training.

How has Pilates changed the way your body feels or moves in everyday life? Have you noticed any improvements in strength, mobility, balance, or confidence? Is there a moment when you realized Pilates was really working for you?

Balance and the mind/body connection have been the biggest ones for me. As a weight lifter, Pilates has helped me to connect mentally to my working muscles better. Pilates has also helped me recognize my deficits, like my hip or shoulder, that I need to improve. PIlates helps me to improve on these deficits in a low-risk manner, while improving strength, stability, and flexibility.

How do you incorporate both strength training and Pilates into your daily routine?

I lift heavy four days a week and do two days of Pilates. I use Pilates mainly to improve my core and pelvic floor. While I don't consider it a "rest" day, I use it to stretch out soreness, focus on breath support, and improve my deficits.

What would you tell someone who is hesitant to try Pilates, but curious about its benefits?

No matter your fitness level, Pilates has amazing benefits. As a beginner, it can ease you back into fitness and help you get started on your journey. As a more experienced fitness person, it can assist you in taking your goals to the next level. Most importantly, as an aging person, it can support you into those years with strength, balance, and coordination.

If you could describe Pilates in one word or phrase, what would it be?

Breathe Shayne lol

Is there anything else you would like to share about your strength training journey,  your journey with Pilates, or working with Natalie?

Working with Natalie has been fun and rewarding. She knows her stuff, challenges you when needed, but also listens and watches your body to see what it needs. I like the one-on-one private sessions in her studio that has all of the fun equipment!

Thank you for sharing your insight, Shayne!
